For the 2016-17 cohort of the Public Service and Outreach Student Scholars, 19 students have been selected following a process of applications and interviews with PSO unit representatives. This group, the seventh cohort of the program, will begin weekly meetings in August, visiting each PSO unit as well as site visits to the Marine Education Center and Aquarium on Skidaway Island, and Rock Eagle 4-H camp in Putnam County.

Nine students from the 2015-16 Public Service and Outreach Student Scholars have been awarded stipends for summer and fall internships with PSO units. Interns include Allison Johnson and Katie Sanders (State Botanical Garden of Georgia); Robert Hines, Parker Bray, and David Harshbarger (Carl Vinson Institute of Government); Jo Money and Janai Raphael (Office of Service-Learning); Ashley Wilson (Georgia Sea Grant); and Stephanie Stathos (Fanning Institute).

The Student Scholars program provides the opportunity for a select cohort of undergraduate students to explore and engage with the University of Georgia’s public service and outreach (PSO) mission. Supported by the Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach, and administered through the Office of Service-Learning, this year-long program is intended to provide deeper understanding of PSO’s purpose, breadth, and depth through supervised service experiences with PSO and communities, to help students link their public service experiences with their career and educational goals, and to create a community of student scholars who understand the role of public service in Georgia and more broadly. The program was first established in Spring 2011 with 10 students.
