2005 Walter Barnard Hill Awards for Distinguished Achievement in University Public Service & Outreach

Jorge Atiles

Jorge H. Atiles is an associate professor and extension housing specialist in the department of housing and consumer economics. He was recently appointed to associate dean for outreach and extension in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences and carries with him the responsibility for Latino program development in Extension. He has shown his commitment to the land-grant university mission indoor air quality through his leadership in developing programs that reach the Hispanic population of Georgia.

Dr. Atiles was awarded the Distinguished Extension Award from Gamma Sigma Delta in 2003 in recognition for his public service program. Other awards include two Excellence through Research Awards and a Community Partnership Award from the National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (NEAFCS).

Collaboration plays a key role in Dr. Atile’s educational programs and his leadership. In addition to his work with colleague sin the Family and Consumer Sciences extension unit and the department of biological and agricultural engineering, the Georgia Department Protection Agency. Dr. Atiles also serves on Vice President Dunning’s Latino Advisory Board and is a representative for the Cooperative Extension Service and the university to various Latino groups in the state.

Dr. Atiles is praised by the people with whom he works for his leadership, commitment, and vision. He has been prolific in the production of educational resources for use by extension personnel, consumers, and community representatives. Through his educational programs, people gain knowledge of housing affordability, indoor air quality, and water and energy issues.

The role of the cooperative extension service is not only to disseminate information, but also to be change agents for a better quality of life. Dr. Atile’s record and his letters of support attest to the fact that he is superior in his ability to accomplish both mandates of public services.
