UGA students participate in children’s garden charrette

November 4, 2009

The State Botanical Gardens of Georgia hosted a design charrette on Friday, October 9, 2009 to discuss the future of the upcoming addition of a children’s garden. In conjunction with the University of Georgia, the Botanical Garden held the two-day charrette to begin the planning phase of the construction of the garden. Graduate school students and faculty members of the university’s College of Environment and Design, as well as local professionals combined to formulate several ideas for the future children’s garden.

The college places emphasis on service-learning and community involvement and is constantly looking to create community partnerships. The Botanical Garden is a unit of the University of Georgia Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach, thus the relationship between the two created a unique opportunity for students of the university to extend their experience while cultivating relationships in the community. Alfie Vick, one of the main faculty members involved in the design charrette said, “It allowed us to collaborate with our community partnerships. They had an idea, and we had expertise.” Continue reading »

Chinese Officials Participate in Vinson Institute Training

October 27, 2009

CHINA

A 10-year partnership between the University of Georgia and China has created numerous opportunities for the university and the state.

A decade ago this year, UGA’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government reached out to China by offering to partner with Chinese training facilities to provide comprehensive civil servant training to government officials.

Since then almost 900 Chinese officials have participated in government training in the U.S. as well as in Beijing, Tianjin, Jiangxi Province and Qinghai Province.

“For the Chinese and for us, it marks a pretty significant milestone of working with them—two very different public entities working together trying to train civil servants around how you manage a government,” said Steve Wrigley, director of the Carl Vinson Institute of Government. “It’s a unique program. I don’t know that there’s anything else like it in the country.”

10th Annual National Outreach Scholarship Conference

September 17, 2009

Join us in September 2009 as we advance the national dialogue about the civic connections made by colleges and universities with their local communities, as well as with communities across the country and around the world. How are these civic connections developed and sustained — by institutions, by faculty members, and by students? How do we assure that learning and research contribute to the well-being of the immediate local community in which an institution resides? How do we do so in an international context? Please join us as we explore the increasingly important topic of the civic purpose of higher education. For more information visit the NOSC homepage.

In an effort to bring service-learning to the UGA campus in Costa Rica, Leigh Askew and Danny Bivins, both faculty members of the Fanning Institute, were awarded two grants: a Service-Learning Fellowship for Askew and an International Scholarship of Engagement Grant for Bivins. They visited Costa Rica in February to meet with farmers in the Finca la Bella community to determine how the students from the College of Environmental Design, the Institute’s partner in this endeavor, can best assist this unique community during their study abroad experience in July. Askew and Bivins returned from their site visit energized by the myriad possibilities and opportunities not only for the upcoming summer term, but for establishing year-round service-learning experiences for all students who study at the campus in Costa Rica.
