The Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel (Georgia Center)
In an outreach effort to military personnel, the Georgia Center’s Independent and Distance Learning Department’s coordinator for online course development and marketing has re-established a partnership with DANTES (Defense Activity for Non-traditional Education Support) – www.dantescatalogs.com – and has posted all of the online courses to its web portal. Independent and Distance Learning courses will now be available for all military personnel stationed around the world.
The International Association for Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (IMACS) held the 18th IMACS World Congress at the Georgia Center on August 3-7, 2009. Seventy-five scientists and practitioners from around the world attended the conference. IMACS was supported by the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences Computer Science Department. Prior to the conference, the National Science Foundation supported a two-day workshop on mathematical biological and numerical analysis attended by 72 academicians and others.
During the month of August, the Georgia Center’s Sales Department booked three conferences with an estimated 405 participants, 375 hotel room nights and 1,240 participant meals for estimated revenue of $71,298. The sales department also booked tactical events for estimated revenue of $36,260. The conference and event planning department coordinated nine conferences with 384 participants and 78 meetings or special events with 3,832 participants.

Information Technology Services Wins International Award
The Carl Vinson Institute’s Information Technology Outreach Services Division recently received the 2009 Special Achievement Award from the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI), a leader in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology. The unit was selected from more than 300,000 organizations worldwide. It was honored for innovative work in helping government entities and international organizations utilize GIS technology to improve their operations and allow better access to information. The Marine Extension Service (MAREX)
San Felipe, Yucatan International Scholarship Engagement Grant
With support of an International Scholarship Engagement grant from the Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach, Lisa Liguori returned to the fishing port of San Felipe, Yucatan, in Mexico to host a workshop for the women’s fishing cooperative. These women learned about mercury levels in local barracuda, a commonly eaten fish. Other outreach events also took place at fishing piers and in kitchens as diverse participants learned about reducing the risks associated with contaminated seafood.

First Group of Vinson Institute Fellows is Announced
The new Vinson Institute Fellows Program has named its first group of interns. The semester-long program provides undergraduate students with an introduction to the workings of state and local government, both in Georgia and abroad. Vinson Fellows are matched with faculty mentors and engage in hands-on learning through interaction with public officials, attending client training programs and conferences, and assisting with the institute’s work in instruction, technical assistance, policy analysis, and research. Andrew Laarhoven, economics and political science major, will work in the Governmental Training, Education, and Development Division. Yasmin Yonis, international affairs and journalism major, will work in the International Center. Lauren Pinson, student in the Master of Public Administration program, will work in the Governmental Services and Research Division.
Stakes Is Governor’s Award Winner
Vinson Institute faculty member Mary Stakes was presented with the Governor’s Award in the Humanities during a luncheon presentation in Atlanta on May 7, 2009. She received the award in recognition of her outstanding service in providing classroom teachers with the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to advance their students’ understanding of Georgia history, government, and civic participation. This is the 24th year the awards have been presented by the Georgia Humanities Council and the Office of the Governor.
