New Faculty Tour 2008: August 4-8

General Information

The New Faculty Tour was started in 1977 by Gene Younts, former vice president for public service and outreach at UGA. It has been held annually except in 1990, 2003, and 2004.

The goal is to introduce new faculty to the state - the economy, geography, history, demography, culture, and the importance of the university to the state. The Tour also introduces academic faculty to UGA’s public service and outreach mission and gives faculty an opportunity to get to know other faculty outside their departments early in their careers.

Each spring, deans, department heads and vice presidents are invited to nominate new faculty and high-level staff to participate. Between 35 and 45 faculty are selected to participate annually.

Testimonials

"On campus, you’re not aware of the roles of the institution in the state. The tour affirmed deep support for the institution and the fact that we’re doing good work."
