UGA Students Host First Latino Youth Conference
Athens, Ga. (March 9, 2006) – The first annual Latino Youth Conference will be held Saturday, April 1, 2006 at the University of Georgia’s Center for Continuing Education. The theme is ¡Sí, Se Puede! or “Yes, You Can.” Sixty rising ninth to twelfth graders from northeast Georgia have been invited to attend this one-day conference on the UGA campus. The event will expose Latino youth to higher education opportunities, educate them on the steps necessary to pursue higher education and encourage leadership in their communities. Attendees will engage in workshops focusing on the college application process, leadership development and socio-cultural issues affecting the Latino community. They also will hear from respected Latino leaders, college students and faculty. Attendees will have the opportunity to speak to campus recruiters and community organization representatives during the College and Community Resource Fair.
Students for Latino/a Empowerment organized the conference; the group plans to make the conference an annual event.
The conference is supported by UGA’s Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, the Steps to College programs of the Georgia Center for Continuing Education, and a grant from the Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach.
