Steven Dempsey promoted to associate vice president for public service and outreach
Athens, Ga. (September 29, 2006) — The University System Board of Regents approved the promotion of L. Steven Dempsey to associate vice president for public service and outreach, effective September 15.“I’m delighted to be able to recognize Steve’s talents and accomplishments with this promotion,” said Art Dunning, UGA vice president for public service and outreach. “He has become a key member of the leadership team for public service and outreach.”
Dempsey will continue to lead the Community Economic Development Initiative, an effort developed by UGA’s Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach to help communities deal with issues related to growth. Programs include the Archway Partnership Project in Moultie, Colquitt County and Communities of Opportunity. Dempsey also serves as the liaison to the University System’s Intellectual Capital Partnership Program or ICAPP.
Dempsey had served as director of special projects for public service and outreach since January 2005. Previously, he was the assistant director of UGA’s Institute of Community Development, executive director of the Executive Development Program for Recreation and Park Professionals, adjunct professor in UGA’s Department of Leisure Services, and assistant professor at Emory University. He also served as co-chair of the Balanced Growth Initiative and the Alliance for Quality Growth, and chair of the Public Service and Outreach Faculty and Staff Professional Development Committee. He provided management consultation to state and local government about recreation service delivery agencies and growth management related issues.
Dempsey served as the process consultant for the University of Georgia’s strategic plan from its inception in 1998 until the plan’s roll out in 2000.
He publishes, speaks, and consults nationally and internationally in both the participatory policy design and recreation and leisure services arena.
Dempsey holds a bachelor’s degree from Montclair State College and a master’s degree from Western Kentucky University, both in recreation. He earned an Ed.D from the University of Georgia in recreation and leisure studies with a counseling minor.
