Athens-area residents receive free health services at 3rd annual Latino Health Fair
Athens, Ga. (October 5, 2006) - More than 300 Athens-area residents received free health tips, screenings and other services at the third annual Latino Health Fair, held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, September 30, 2006.
Attendees received free cholesterol, blood pressure and diabetes screenings, as well as free clinical breast exams and health counseling. Information, including a Spanish language poster with up-to-date listings of local bilingual resources, was also available to educate residents about area health providers, social services and job assistance. A Latin band provided entertainment for the event and activities such as a “Fun Fitness Class” were available for children.
The University of Georgia’s Latin American and Caribbean Studies Institute (LACSI) partnered with the American Cancer Society, Catholic Charities Inc., the Clarke County School District, Athens Regional Medical Center and other local organizations to sponsor the event, which aims to raise awareness of health and medical issues in Athens’ Latino community.

As an area studies unit of the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Institute offers an undergraduate major and certificate in Latin American and Caribbean studies. LACSI faculty serve on the Latino Advisory Board, part of UGA’s Latino Initiative sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach.
