Athens, Ga. (April 4, 2007) — The Carl Vinson Institute of Government and the Fanning Institute teamed up once again to participate in the Hands on Athens project weekend, March 30-April 1. The Hands on Athens organization serves low-income families in the Athens area by providing essential repairs to homes.Captains for the house project were Amanda Smart from the Vinson Institute and Danny Bivins from the Fanning Institute. The home is located at 282 Magnolia Street, and the collaborative effort of volunteers from both organizations resulted in scraping and painting the entire house, replacing rotten boards, repairing a railing, landscaping, and installing a new granite walkway, Smart said.
“The elderly homeowner is very happy with all the work that was accomplished in such a short time and is very appreciative of our efforts,” she said. Youth from Emmanuel Episcopal Church also helped with the repair work.
“As public service and outreach units working out in the state, it makes sense that our two organizations also serve the local community in which the university resides,” Bivins said.
