State Botanical Garden publishes field guide to Georgia’s rare plants
Athens, Ga. (April 16, 2007) – The State Botanical Garden of Georgia has recently published the Field Guide to the Rare Plants of Georgia by Linda G. Chafin, a conservation botanist at the Garden. The new field guide is the first book to provide identification, habitat, and management information for the rarest of Georgia’s plants in a single, field-oriented volume.
Illustrated with more than 400 color photographs and 200 detailed drawings, the guide covers more than 200 species, including two dozen that are federally listed and more than 170 that are listed as Threatened, Endangered, Rare or of Special Concern by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. The guide is designed for easy, non-technical identification of species by students, foresters, nurserymen, wildflower enthusiasts, botanists, land mangers and environmental planners.
The book is available in two versions, a flexi-bound (perfect bound with water-resistant flexible cover) and a water-resistant ring binder (loose-leaf bound to facilitate custom arrangement of the pages). Both are available at the State Botanical Garden Gift Shop and at leading bookstores throughout the country for $34.95 plus tax and shipping. The University of Georgia Press is the official distributor for the flexi-bound version, which can also be ordered from their on-line catalog.
