Proposals Sought for UGA’s Poverty and the Economy Grants Program
Athens, Ga. (April 18, 2007) – The Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach solicits grant proposals from University of Georgia faculty whose scholarship is related to poverty and the economy in Georgia.
Entering its third year of funding, the Poverty and the Economy Faculty Research Grants Program is sponsored by the University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. The goal of the program is to support and encourage applied research and creative scholarship related to poverty and the economy in Georgia.
“Starting with the Study on Persistent Poverty in the South that identified 91 counties in Georgia that historically have had some of our nation’s highest poverty rates, faculty here at UGA have answered the call to investigate new approaches for understanding the nature and extent of persistent poverty,” said Art Dunning, vice president for public service and outreach. “It is my hope that these grants will stimulate further research into the causes and consequences of poverty, which ultimately will inform public policy about how to improve people’s lives and the Georgia economy.”
Although no limit has been established for individual grant awards, a total of $100,000 is available in 2007. It is expected that four to six grants of $15,000-$30,000 will be awarded.
All UGA faculty members who are interested or engaged in research related to analyzing persistent poverty are eligible to apply. Applications that reflect collaboration across academic and service units are highly encouraged. In addition, research that builds on understanding the public policy barriers that inhibit or limit an individual’s ability to participate fully in the economy and build personal wealth are of particular interest. This program will help guide ways in which the university can address the issue of persistent poverty through teaching, research, and service.
The deadline for applications is September 28, 2007. In addition, a pre-application workshop will be held on September 6, 2007, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm in the Training Room of the Fanning Building. Guidelines, deadlines, and other pertinent information related to the Poverty and the Economy Research Grants Program can be found at the University of Georgia’s Initiative for Poverty and the Economy Web site at http://www.poverty.uga.edu/.
