Members of the Public Service and Outreach Staff Representative Group traveled to the Marine Education Center and Aquarium on Skidaway Island, March 26-27. This trip provided the opportunity for Public Service staff members from main campus to observe and learn about the operation of the Marine Extension unit.
Regular SRG meetings are held every other month at a Public Service unit on the Athens campus and off-campus members join in via conference call. Barbara Bower, the representative from Skidaway, informed the group about issues related to safety, grounds upkeep, and a lack of human resources information, which is especially problematic for new hires. SRG members offered advice and assistance with these matters. Chris Weaver, chair of the group, commented that “the trip to Skidaway allowed us to get a real feel for the issues and challenges off-campus staff deal with.” In addition to conducting the meeting, group members were able to view the aquarium and tour the waters surrounding the center compliments of Captain Fran Lapolla.
