Celebrating the legacy of J.W. Fanning
Athens, GA (August 9, 2007) – On August 14, 2007, the Fanning Institute will celebrate the life and contributions of its namesake, J.W. Fanning, UGA’s first vice president for services, with the first annual Fanning Day on what would have been Fanning’s 102nd birthday.
The event will include remarks about Fanning and his wife, Cora Lee, from family members and UGA officials; a presentation on the work of the Fanning Institute; and the unveiling of two garden benches installed in honor of the couple, a gift of Dink NeSmith of Athens, a close friend of the Fannings. Refreshments will feature J.W. Fanning’s favorite foods—fried chicken, lemonade and 10-layer chocolate cake. Karen E. Holt, director, said Fanning Day will be an annual event to celebrate how the institute carries on Fanning’s work.
“Just as Dr. Fanning urged us to ‘stay alive as long as we live,’ so we are adapting and anticipating as the needs of the people and communities we serve change,” Holt said. The public is invited to the event, which will take place from 2 – 4 p.m. at the Fanning Building, 1240 S. Lumpkin.
