Bilingual educational forum to be held for outstanding high school seniors
Athens, Ga. (October 3, 2007) – The University of Georgia will host the second annual Padres e Hijos Fin de Semana (Parents and Students Weekend) October 5-6, 2007, at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. This event is one of several UGA programs designed to increase educational opportunities for Georgia’s youth.
Padres e Hijos Fin de Semana is a two-day event in which 18 of Georgia’s top-performing high school students and their parents will visit UGA for a bilingual educational forum designed to welcome and encourage potential UGA applicants. Current UGA students, parents, faculty and alumni will be on-hand to welcome the visitors and talk about their personal experiences with campus life and the college application process. The weekend event is jointly supported by the Georgia Center and UGA’s Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach
Participants were selected through a competitive process that reviewed academic performance, including coursework rigor, grade point average, SAT college-entrance-exam test scores, school leadership, involvement in the Latino community and likelihood to apply for admission to UGA.
The program will commence with a welcoming reception and an introduction of bilingual ambassador-hosts who will be available throughout the event.
Other activities include:
• Introductions to UGA faculty, staff and students
• Speakers, including members of UGA’s Latino community
• Informational group activities
• Conversations with academic and admissions representatives
• An opportunity to fill out the early admission application
The 18 participants include: Gabriella Baetti, Cobb County; Rosalee Bernabé, Forsyth County; Jesús Castrejon, Hall County; Jeffrey Correa, North Fulton County; Karla Garcia, DeKalb County; Adrian Guarneros, Gwinnett County; David Gutierrez, Dougherty County; Carla Medina, Cobb County; Cristina Miranda, Cobb County; Verónica Paz, Fulton County; Marcella Preininger, Fayette County; Amanda Quesada, Oconee County; Juan David Quintero, Gwinnett County; Winston Rivero, Gwinnett County; Natalie Sorto, Gwinnett County; Anna Subieta, Cobb County; and Isabel Yanker-Morales; Fulton County; and Roland Larino, Cary, North Carolina.
