The Marine Extension Service (MAREX)Southeastern Fisheries Association

San Felipe, Yucatan International Scholarship Engagement Grant
With support of an International Scholarship Engagement grant from the Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach, Lisa Liguori returned to the fishing port of San Felipe, Yucatan, in Mexico to host a workshop for the women’s fishing cooperative. These women learned about mercury levels in local barracuda, a commonly eaten fish. Other outreach events also took place at fishing piers and in kitchens as diverse participants learned about reducing the risks associated with contaminated seafood.

Southeastern Fisheries Association

Dave Harrington Award. The captain of UGA’s research vessel, Lindsey Parker, was presented with the Dave Harrington Award by the Southeastern Fisheries Association at the annual meeting in Key West, Florida.

Women’s Leadership Institute in Brunswick
Lisa Liguori was among 15 women recognized by the Coastal Georgia Foundation as participants in the Women’s Leadership Institute in Brunswick, Georgia. Participants in this eight-month program develop skills in areas that will allow them better to serve the community: governance, strategic planning, fiscal oversight, due diligence, communication, and conflict resolution.

The Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel (Georgia Center)

The Georgia Center hosted the Athens Convention and Visitors Bureau (ACVB) Tourism Breakfast on May 15, 2009. The breakfast was a part of the ACVB’s celebration of the local impact of tourism during National Travel and Tourism Week. The breakfast hosted nearly 70 people, including Mayor Heidi Davison. Athens Hospitality H.E.R.O.E.S. (Hospitality Employees Recognition of Excellent Service) awards were presented during the breakfast.

A new corporate group agreement was secured with Eli Lilly & Company to enroll 10-24 employees in the Georgia Center’s Principles of Pharmaceutical Marketing Research course over a 12 month period. Founded by Eli Lilly in 1876, Lilly USA is now the 10th largest pharmaceutical company in the world. Eli Lilly & Company has developed productive alliances and partnerships that advance capacity to develop innovative medicines at lower cost.

During the month of May, the Georgia Center’s sales department booked two conferences with an estimated 410-520 participants, 200 hotel room nights and 620 participant meals. The conference and event planning department coordinated 116 conferences, meetings, and special events for a total of 5,742 participants.

The State Botanical Garden of Georgia

The Friends of the State Botanical Garden received a $320,000 bequest from the estate of Elizabeth Parr “BeBe” Aderhold. BeBe was a longtime member of the Friends organization and remained keenly interested in the garden throughout her lifetime. She was the daughter of the former President of the University of Georgia, O.C. Aderhold, and Bess Aderhold.

The Carl Vinson Institute of Government (Vinson Institute)

New Training Partnership with UGA-Griffin
Local government appointed officials in the Griffin regional area will have a convenient location for professional development thanks to a new partnership between the Carl Vinson Institute and the University of Georgia’s Griffin Campus Office of Continuing Education. The partnership was introduced May 29, 2009, in Griffin at a special briefing session for local officials.

Institute Faculty Member Develops Special Handbook for Census Bureau
The director of the Institute’s Applied Demography Program, Warren Brown, is the author of a new U.S Census Bureau handbook aimed at helping researchers better understand and utilize data included in the American Community Survey (ACS), a special product of the bureau that collects and releases population and housing information every year. The publication is one of 12 on the use of ACS data that could be targeted to specific audiences like government officials, media, the business community, and others. The handbook for researchers was published in late May 2009 and familiarizes readers with issues that might affect how they access and analyze ACS data

International Public Service and Outreach (IPSO)

Reception for Bio India Delegation to 2009 Atlanta Bio International Convention
On May 18, 2009, IPSO co-hosted a reception given by Georgia Indo-American Chamber of Commerce to honor a distinguished group of delegates from India to the 2009 Bio International Convention. The event was held at the Goizueta Business School at Emory University. Travel Grant Received to Present Contributed Paper at 27th Conference in Beijing
Training, Internships, Exchanges, and Scholarships (TIES) Graduate Student from Mexico, Sonia Velásquez Guerrero, received a travel grant from the International Association of Agricultural Economists (IAAE) to present her contributed paper, Ruffled Feathers: Tariff Rate Quotas and Voluntary Export Agreements in U.S. Mexican Poultry Meat Trade, in Beijing, China at the 27th Conference of the International Association of Agricultural Economists. The Fanning Institute

Youth Leadership Program
“Big League: Career Trading Cards for the Future”. During the month of May 2009, through a collaboration with the Fanning Institute, LEAD Athens, and Coile Middle School, Delene Porter, Danny Bivins, and Tyson Young helped 45 students visualize themselves as “Pros.” Forty-five students, referred by the English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program and the Coile graduation coach, participated in the creation of Career Trading Cards. After identifying their career goals, each student was photographed as the professional they plan to be. Each photo became the front of a trading card, and the back displayed education and skills needed, job duties, job market, and salary range for their chosen career. Each student received a complete deck of the Career Trading Cards to share with their family and friends. Coile Middle School is considered a Title I school since 90 percent of students qualify for free and reduced lunches. Education and career opportunities go hand in hand as the only sustainable way to break the cycle of poverty.

Environmental Leadership Program
The Institute for Georgia Environmental Leadership (IGEL) welcomed 32 leaders from agriculture, forestry, business, education, environmental organizations, government, and civic groups into the eighth class of IGEL. The 2009 class will join the 212 alumni from across the state that previously completed the program, and are leaving their imprint on the development of national, state and local environmental public policy. These IGEL class participants will attend four sessions that were held throughout the state beginning in May 2009 and will conclude in November 2009. Mediation and Conflict Management Program
Fanning Institute faculty member, Raye Rawls created and implemented a Webinar program involving 75 participants for the Georgia Health Policy Center on Mediation and Conflict Management.

Service-Learning Community Economic Development Program
Project Riverway
Danny Bivins and Leigh Askew, received a National Association of Development Organizations (NADO) Innovation Award. This program recognizes organizations that have demonstrated innovative approaches to regional economic and community development. Many of the winning organizations partnered with local businesses, educational institutions, and non-profit groups, allowing them simultaneously to address human and economic development needs, leverage funds, and eliminate duplication. Publications
Janet Rechtman article, A Road Made by Walking: Participatory Evaluation and Social Change, was accepted for publication in The Foundation Review, Vol 1, Issue 2, Spring 2009, pp. 30-40. Rob Williams chapter, Developing Leadership in Higher Education, was accepted for publication in a new book called The Business of Higher Education by Praeger Publishing scheduled for release in Fall 2009.
