The Office of Service-Learning is extending UGA’s AmeriCorps VISTA network to support service-learning and experiential learning opportunities. In addition to three currently placed VISTAs, the Office of Service-Learning will coordinate six new VISTAs to be placed with the Athens Community Council on Aging (senior hunger VISTA), the Campus Kitchen at UGA, and at all four Clarke County middle schools. These middle school garden VISTAs, some of whom are partially funded by the Clarke County School District, will work to extend the school garden, sustainability, and healthy eating initiatives that have been piloted by Wick Prichard, a VISTA at Clarke Middle School. VISTAs spend a year of full-time voluntary service oriented towards capacity-building and poverty reduction, and receive a small living allowance and benefits.
