Athens, Ga. – Three University of Georgia faculty members have been named Public Service and Outreach Fellows for the fall semester.

The Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach (PSO) began the PSO Fellowship Program in 2011 to help create more outreach avenues for tenure-track and tenured professionals. The fellowships allow professors to immerse themselves in the work of a PSO unit for a semester and use the knowledge they gain in their academic courses, conduct research and apply their expertise to outreach initiatives.

Aliki Nicolaides, an assistant professor of adult education in the College of Education, is working with the J. W. Fanning Institute for Leadership Development on developing an instructional program designed to help the Institute continue expanding its abilities in meeting the various leadership challenges in Georgia communities..

Julie Spivey, associate professor of graphic design in the Lamar Dodd School of Art, is collaborating with Georgia Sea Grant, Marine Extension Service (MAREX) and the Carl Vinson Institute of Government as they address issues and hazards in Georgia’s coastal communities. She will use her fellowship to create visual communication pieces that clearly explain the project and aim to enhance understanding and build trust between government entities and local citizens.

Alfred Vick, Georgia Power Professor of environmental ethics in the College of Environment and Design, is working with the State Botanical Garden of Georgia to develop plans for the Mimsie Lanier Center for Native Plant Studies. The center will support ongoing research, teaching and outreach activities and will increase student and faculty engagement.

In addition to the Fanning Institute, Georgia Sea Grant, MAREX, the Institute of Government and the Botanical Garden, PSO units include the Georgia Center for Continuing Education, the Small Business Development Center, the Archway Partnership and the Office of Service-Learning, which also reports to the Office of the Vice President for Instruction.
