Employee Spotlights recognized children’s garden staff

Two State Botanical Garden of Georgia employees, Katie McCollum, Alice H. Richards Children’s Garden curator, and Audrey Mitchell, children’s program coordinator, are in the UGA Public Service and Outreach Spotlight for their valuable contributions to the garden and to children’s education.

McCollum, who coordinates the Sweet Pea Club, a weekly program geared to children ages 3 to 6, the garden’s performance series, and the Garden Gnomes docent program, “maintains this garden in a way that inspires and engages both children and adults,” said Jenny Cruse-Sanders, director of the State Botanical Garden of Georgia.

“Katie builds partnerships with our community through tours of the children’s garden, actively participating in educational programs, and representing SBG with excellence in the Athens community,” Cruse-Sanders said.

Mitchell manages school field trips and summer camps, and keeps the local community aware of children’s educational programs at the garden.

“Audrey consistently and effectively communicates our programs to many different groups, including teachers, parents, partners, volunteers, and staff, and contributes significantly to the success of our children’s programs,” said Cruse-Sanders, who nominated both McCollum and Mitchell for the Employee Spotlight.

“Katie and Audrey exemplify the spirit of community service we are striving for at PSO,” said Jennifer Frum, vice president for Public Service and Outreach. “Their efforts help the State Botanical Garden carry out UGA’s pledge of service to the state and its residents.”

Both employees received a gift basket of treats and a framed certificate recognizing the award. Find out more about the PSO Spotlight Award and how to nominate an employee at https://outreach.uga.edu/awards/pso-employee-spotlight/.
