Ethan Christmas of the UGA Carl Vinson Institute of Government recently was awarded the Public Service and Outreach Employee Spotlight Award.
Christmas serves as a junior data scientist in the institute’s Data Analysis and Visualization Unit. In this role, he helps government agencies solve complex problems through data analysis, programming, and business intelligence tools. He uses statistical programming and business intelligence platforms to analyze data, visualize trends and explore potential future outcomes—helping agencies make informed, data-driven decisions.
He quickly made an impact by leading a major transformation in the institute’s collaboration with the Georgia Department of Administrative Services. Christmas converted a manual Excel-based process into an automated, transparent system that improved data quality, enhanced visualization options and streamlined internal workflows. His work not only saved time and resources but also laid the groundwork for more scalable and sustainable data solutions moving forward.
In addition to his technical contributions, Christmas has stepped up as a dynamic facilitator for business intelligence trainings, including programs for local and state governments. He has led short-notice sessions for organizations such as Columbus Water Works and played a key role in the institute’s recent Developing Data Analytics Conference. Colleagues and participants alike commend his approachable style, professionalism, and ability to explain complex material with clarity and patience. His sessions consistently foster a collaborative, welcoming environment where participants feel supported, engaged and motivated to build new skills.
Christmas joined the Institute of Government in 2024 and was nominated by James Byars, manager of the Data Analysis and Visualization Unit.

Christmas received a gift basket of treats and a framed certificate recognizing the award.
