UGA names interim student affairs VP

Veteran administrator Tom Burke was named on Tuesday the University of Georgia’s interim vice president for student affairs.

As of April 1, Burke will take over for Rodney Bennett, who is leaving the vice presidential post to become president of the University of Southern Mississippi. Bennett has been in the job since 2005.

Burke has been associate vice president for student affairs and an adjunct professor in UGA’s College of Education since 2000.

Burke will not seek the permanent appointment for the vice presidential job.

UGA Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Jere Morehead has appointed a search committee to find a long-term replacement for Bennett. Jennifer Frum, vice president for public service and outreach, chairs the search committee.

Burke has a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Asheville and master’s and Ph.D. degrees from Florida State University. He was dean of student life at Middle Tennessee State University and associate director of student life at the University of Alabama before coming to UGA.
